Leaving a bequest / legacy PDF Print E-mail
Legacies form an important part of our income, and we are extremely grateful to our supporters who generously choose to help our work in this way.

If you decide you want to remember Brent Lodge in your Will, it is most helpful to us if bequests are made for the general charitable purposes of the charity, rather than for a specific purpose, as this means your gift can be spent where it is most needed at the time it is received.

Making a "Specific Legacy"

A "Specific Legacy" consists of a specified sum of money or a specific item of personal property. Normally a Specific Legacy will form only part of your Will, and where this is the case, the following wording within the Will is suggested:

"I give and bequeath the sum of £……………. (that sum in words) to the Brent Lodge Bird and Wildlife Trust, registered Charity number 276179, presently of Brent Lodge, Cow Lane, Sidlesham, Chichester, PO20 7LN, to be applied for its general charitable purposes, and I declare that the receipt of the Treasurer, Trustee or other proper officer for the time being of the Brent Lodge Bird & Wildlife Trust shall be sufficient discharge therefor."

Alternatively, the first part of the above paragraph may say: "I give and bequeath my ……………………………...(description of chattel or land or property) to the Brent Lodge Bird and Wildlife Trust ….."

Making a "Residuary Bequest"

A "Residuary Bequest" is the residue of your estate, or a share of the residue, after all your debts and any legacies you leave to other people have been paid. If you wish to leave all the residue of your estate to Brent Lodge, the following wording within your Will is suggested:

"I give and bequeath all the residue of my estate both real and personal not hereby or by any codicil hereto otherwise disposed of unto my Trustees upon trust to sell call in and convert the same into money with power to postpone the sale calling in and conversion for so long as they think fit and to stand possessed of the net proceeds thereof upon trust following payment of my just debts funeral and testamentary expenses for the Brent Lodge Bird and Wildlife Trust, registered Charity number 276179, presently of Brent Lodge, Cow Lane, Sidlesham, Chichester, PO20 7LN, absolutely to be applied for its general charitable purposes, and I declare that the receipt of the Treasurer, Trustee or other proper officer for the time being of the Brent Lodge Bird & Wildlife Trust shall be sufficient discharge to my Trustees."

If you wish to leave a share of the residue of your estate to Brent Lodge, we suggest that you discuss this with your solicitor, who will explain exactly how the bequest should be worded. Adding a bequest to an existing Will If you have already made a Will, but would now like to include a bequest to the Brent Lodge Bird and Wildlife Trust, a simple codicil can be added with the following suggested wording:

"This is a Codicil made by me ………………………………………….… of …………………….………….…….. ………………………………………………………………... and dated …………………….……………………… to my will dated …………………………… . I give and bequeath a pecuniary legacy of £………….(that sum in words} to the Brent Lodge Bird and Wildlife Trust, registered Charity Number 276179, of Brent Lodge, Cow Lane, Sidlesham, Chichester, West Sussex, PO20 7LN, to be applied for its general charitable purposes, and I declare that the receipt of the Treasurer, Trustee or other proper officer for the time being of the Brent Lodge Bird & Wildlife Trust shall be sufficient discharge therefor. In all other respects I confirm my said Will."

Such Codicil will need to be signed and witnessed in the same way as the Will itself, although the witnesses do not have to be the same. The Codicil must be kept with, but not affixed to, your Will.

If you are able to remember Brent Lodge in your Will, you will help ensure the future of our work. With your help, we will continue to strive to rehabilitate sick and injured birds and wildlife. Thank you for generously helping to make this possible.
