Pledge-a-Hedgehog today 🗓

Britain is rapidly losing its hedgehogs – we must act now.

Will you Pledge-a-Hedgehog today and donate £100 to help your local wildlife hospital provide expert care to vulnerable hedgehogs.

Give a helping hand to hedgehogs today

We are collecting pledges for the Big Give Christmas Challenge 2019.  We are looking for people who will pledge a donation.  If we reach our goal of £2,125 in pledges this will then be matched by ‘Champion Funders’ to total £4,500. Your pledges will help us reach our campaign target of £8,500 and be used to double online donations raised during the Christmas Challenge in December.  This is a fantastic opportunity to raise Pledge-a-hedgehog and give our expert team at Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital a donation pledge towards our winter life-saving hedgehog programme. All pledges need to be received by Friday 30th August at 5pm.  They will not need to be paid until after 10th December.  To make a pledge, please follow this link and complete the short form.  There is also further information about how the Big Give Christmas Challenge works.

Pledges must be £100 or more. We also need people who will donate online, this happens later in the year between 3rd to 10th December 2019.

The truth about hedgehog decline.

Hedgehog numbers have declined dramatically in recent years, mainly due to habitat loss, agricultural practices, shrinking territories and depleted food sources. Warmer winters and disruption to hibernation are causing hedgehogs to wake up earlier to forage more frequently and later summers are causing more to be born too close to hibernation resulting in babies too small to survive the winter on their own, therefore we need to give specialised care to secure their survival and species future.

What are Brent Lodge doing to help?

Each year Brent Lodge cares for 600 hedgehogs, with over 250 admitted in winter. We provide expert advise, life-saving care, rehabilitation facilities, specialist food and vet treatment to those that are usually too small or too sick to survive hibernation.

How will your support help us?

With your support we can provide these vulnerable hedgehogs with the care, rehabilitation facilities and vet treatment they need to dramatically increase their chances of survival. Once rehabilitated, we can release more breeding hedgehog pairs back to the wild increasing their depleted numbers and stabilising the local population. Through our educational outreach about the perils hedgehogs face in the wild and advise on the steps communities can take to consider hedgehog welfare, we can improve the long term outlook for their survival in local natural habitats.

What is The Big Give Christmas Challenge?

One donation, twice the impact.

The Big Give runs the UK’s biggest match funding campaign, The Christmas Challenge. The Christmas Challenge is a match funding campaign where donations to participating charities are doubled. The match funds come from two sources – charities secure some of these (Pledges), these funds are then boosted by funds from a Big Give Champion who contributes to the match fund. This collective pot is used to double donations from online supporters when the campaign is live. For seven days from 3rd December to 10th December, it offers our supporters the opportunity to have their donation doubled.

What are we asking for?

We are hoping to raise £8,500 in total towards various cost associated with hedgehog care such as specialised food, equipment, outreach work and general hedgehog welfare. With £2,125 of this raised through pledges and a further £2,125 matched by Big Give Champions. The remaining £4,500 will be raised through online donations during the seven giving days from 3rd December to 10th December

What’s the difference between a donation and a pledge?

A donation is a gift made at the time during the seven giving days between 3rd – 10th December, while pledges are promises of funding to be paid later which are used to double donations made to us during the live campaign. Pledges must be made before 30th August and paid after the campaign is completed, 10th December 2019 12:00 and before the deadline, 17th January 2020, 17:00.

What difference will my individual pledge make to the cause?

£100 Will provide 2 orphaned hedgehog with lifesaving specialised care such as formula feeding, vet treatment or benefiting from the warmth of an incubator. Giving them the strength they need during the first 4 weeks of their lives.

£155 To keep one hedgehog in the hospital for 3 months over winter, to prevent hibernation, which could be fatal if hedgehogs are underweight or injured.

£220 Will fund one of the nine new rehabilitation units. These are cleaned every day and patients are given fresh bedding, food and water, and in the case of hedgehogs – their weight is checked. All of this takes time, and these new units are helping improve efficiency and increase patient welfare.
