WHAT TO DO

IF YOU FIND A SICK OR INJURED BIRD OR ANIMAL

Click here to find your nearest wildlife rehabilitation centre.

Call us for advice if you are local and we are open to admissions.

You can also call your local veterinary clinic for advice or to arrange treatment.

Veterinary clinics are obliged to provide 24-hour emergency first aid and pain relief to any injured animal including wildlife - at no charge to the finder.

To avoid delay please DO NOT email or leave a voice message if you have a wildlife emergency.

Do not approach any large and powerful animals such as foxes, deer, badgers or swans. They need to be handled by experienced wildlife rescuers only.

Observe from a safe distance close by.

Call for advice on the best course of action for the animals welfare.

If safe to do so, approach the bird or small animal and try to contain it in a strong cardboard box lined with newspaper or a towel. Using a towel or blanket to throw over it may prevent it from fleeing or flying away.

Use gloves when handling wildlife and be careful – they will be afraid of you and can peck, scratch or bite.

Do not be tempted to care for casualties yourself or keep it at home – the animal is much more likely to deteriorate or die

They may be suffering, in shock, or developing an infection and you would not know. Birds and animals mask pain - they need specialist treatment and experienced care and feeding to maximise their survival chances.

As soon as possible place the animal in a warm, dark and quiet place and take them to a wildlife rehabilitation centre or vet.
