Brent Geese Release | A Legacy Lives On

At Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital, every animal that comes into our care has a story — and sometimes, those stories connect deeply with our own. Recently, we had the privilege of admitting two injured Brent Geese, beautiful birds that hold a very special place in our history.

One goose had suffered severe wounds after a brutal dog attack, while the other showed injuries and feather loss consistent with becoming entangled in a fishing hook. Both birds faced significant challenges, but thanks to several weeks of dedicated care, expert rehabilitation, and a lot of patience, we are thrilled to share that they made a full recovery.

Earlier this spring, we released them back into a safe, local wetland habitat, where they quickly proved they were fit and strong enough to continue their incredible journey — migrating thousands of miles to reach their seasonal destinations.

The Epic Journey of the Brent Goose

Brent Geese are truly remarkable travellers. Each year, they embark on one of the most demanding migrations of any bird species. In the spring, they leave their wintering grounds in southern England — including coastal marshes and estuaries — and head north towards Russia.

Covering thousands of miles, these small but resilient geese rely heavily on protected wetland stopovers to rest and refuel. The health of these habitats is critical for their survival. Their long migratory flights are a powerful reminder of the interconnectedness of wildlife and ecosystems across the globe.

Witnessing the two Brent Geese we cared for re-join their wild counterparts and resume this ancient, arduous journey was an emotional and rewarding moment for our team.

Brent Geese Release. A Legacy That Soars

Brent Geese hold a very special place in the heart of Brent Lodge. Over 50 years ago, it was an injured Brent Goose that first inspired our founder, Dennis Fenter, to establish a sanctuary for wildlife in need. The bird’s resilience and beauty left a lasting impression, leading Dennis to name the hospital "Brent Lodge".

To this day, every Brent Goose we help feels like a tribute to our beginnings — a beautiful connection to the bird that started it all. Seeing these geese recover and return to the wild is a proud reminder of our mission and the legacy we continue to uphold.

Thank you for supporting Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital. Together, we make a real difference — for individual animals, for species, and for the natural world they depend on.
