A SECOND CHANCE FOR WILDLIFE
Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital, based in West Sussex, offers a second chance for injured, sick, and orphaned wildlife. With a legacy spanning over 50 years, the hospital's mission is clear: to treat, rehabilitate, with the aim to release healthy wild animals back into their natural habitats. The challenges faced by wildlife, often resulting from depleted food sources, habitat destruction or human activities, are evident in the patients received at Brent Lodge – from garden birds becoming malnourished due to lack of food to hedgehogs impacted by habitat loss.
The recent release of the State of Nature Report, highlighting that the UK continues to be one of the most nature depleted countries, is a stark reminder that we must do all we can to support wildlife. World Wildlife Day is an opportunity to celebrate our love for the natural world and our shared responsibility to respect and protect wildlife. Beyond being a mere date on the calendar, World Wildlife Day represents a global movement to encourage individuals to safeguard and forge a better future for wild animals, not just worldwide but much closer to home too.
SAFEGUARDING OUR GARDEN BIRDS
Creating a safe haven for garden visitors is one of the most important things you can do to help our feathered friends thrive - contributing to the well-being and conservation of your local wildlife. Your garden should host a great natural food source for garden birds, even if you are not a keen gardener there will be a supply of insects, berries and nuts hidden away. Providing a regular supply of supplementary food and water for the birds and other wildlife visiting your garden is also vital to their survival, especially during extreme weather conditions and for exhausted mothers.
Ensure to provide a year-round supply of food, adapting to the seasonal needs of birds. Offer high-protein foods in summer and high-fat/energy foods in winter. Create multiple feeding stations to reduce competition among birds, and maintain cleanliness to prevent the spread of diseases. While supporting all wildlife is essential, consider placing feeders further down your garden to deter rats and keep out of reach of your cats and dogs.
