Inspiring the Next Generation: Why The New Wildlife & Natural History GCSE Matters

There is exciting news for wildlife, conservation and educators across the UK. The Government has announced its intention to introduce a new Natural History GCSE, giving young people the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the natural world and the challenges it faces.

At Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital, we welcome this announcement. As a wildlife charity dedicated not only to rescuing and rehabilitating sick, injured and orphaned wildlife but also to educating future generations, we believe this qualification is an important step towards creating a society that better understands, values and protects nature.

Natural History GCSE

Learning Beyond the Classroom

The new Natural History GCSE is intended to launch in 2028 and will encourage pupils to explore three core areas:

• Habitats and wildlife in the UK

• Human impacts on the natural world

• Climate change, biodiversity loss and conservation

Importantly, the qualification will also include practical fieldwork, allowing students to leave the classroom and experience nature first-hand. Whether investigating local habitats, identifying wildlife or studying ecosystems, pupils will gain valuable practical skills while developing a stronger connection with the environment around them.

This hands-on approach recognises that some of the most meaningful learning happens outdoors, where young people can witness wildlife and conservation in action.

Why The New Wildlife & Natural History GCSE Matters

Across the UK, wildlife is facing increasing pressures. Habitat loss, pollution, climate change, invasive species and human activity continue to impact many of our native animals.

At Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital, we see these challenges every day through the thousands of wildlife casualties admitted into our care each year. From orphaned hedgehogs and injured birds of prey to gulls affected by urban environments and mammals displaced by development, many of the animals we treat are directly impacted by the changing world around them.

Education plays a vital role in addressing these issues. By helping people understand how ecosystems function and how their actions affect wildlife, we can inspire positive change that benefits both people and nature.

The Natural History GCSE has the potential to encourage future conservationists, ecologists, wildlife rehabilitators and environmental scientists, while also helping every student develop a greater appreciation of Britain's remarkable wildlife.

Supporting Wildlife Learning Through Brent Lodge

Education has always been an important part of Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital's mission.

Our Respect & Protect Wildlife Education Outreach Programme works with schools, community groups and local organisations to inspire people of all ages to care for wildlife and the environment.

Through engaging presentations, interactive workshops and work experience opportunities, we encourage young people to discover the incredible wildlife living around them while learning practical ways they can make a positive difference.

Some of the topics we cover are;

·        The life and times of UK wildlife – species, lifecycles, diets etc

·        What sort of casualties we admit and how we treat and rehabilitate them;

·        How and where we do animal releases;

·        Human habits that affect animals and how to minimise the harms of our way of life

Whether it's understanding how to help injured wildlife, creating wildlife-friendly gardens or learning about biodiversity, we hope to inspire the next generation to become champions for nature.
